Meet your Hat Maker

Hi, I’m Bernadette …

Growing up, I could never find a hat that would fit my head. Wide brim floppy hats were all the rage to us teenage girls and I had to miss out. I spent years watching hat styles change, longing to wear them but they were always too small. Finally in college, I discovered a custom hat shop. Walking in, I saw stunning hats that were actually in my size. At the time I couldn’t afford one but the chance to have one was there. I never got custom hats out of my mind.

A few years later, I met a hatmaker very randomly in a bar. I decided it was time and ended up buying a custom hat. Picking out my felt color, sweatband and hat band color was so fun for me. When I got my hat, It was a smidgen too small for me so I hit up a local hatter and asked him to stretch my hat to my proper size. I ended up staying 2 hours at his shop talking all things hats. It was SO interesting to learn how they were made, the tools needed to make them and the history behind hatmaking. That visit made me view hats as a craft as opposed to a fashion item. It literally changed my life. After then, I started to do my own research and learning and over time bought the tools and materials needed to make hats. In 2022 I spent a week learning from a master hat maker which solidified my desire to start my own company.

… and this is Denali!

Denali Hat Co is named after my Siberian Husky Denali. Yes, I named my business after my dog. Never thought I’d be one of those people but here we are. Denali has my heart and while I know her time with me is temporary, I knew I’d always want there to be a Denali in my life.

“Denali” is Athabaskan for “the high one”. I strive to make the best hats of the highest quality. It’s also fitting that I’m creating something that will live at the highest point of your body. I choose to honor the origin of Denali’s name by incorporating some Native American pieces into our hatbands (all used with permission of course).

Our adventures!
